The vast quantity of roads managed and constructed by Local Governments has the potential to provide an untapped means of recycling more waste tyres. Local Government often seek to use VicRoads' specifications to guide their road design and construction.
Despite being environmentally focused, it has been identified that Local Governments are not confident in using recycled tyres in their roads. While crumb rubber in asphalt is not a new innovation, DoT does not currently have a conventional asphalt specification that is suitable for use by Local Governments which allows for the use of asphalt that incorporates crumb rubber.
A VicRoads specification (Standard Section 422 Light Traffic Crumb Rubber Asphalt) has therefore been developed as part of a Sustainability Victoria (SV) Research and Development Grant project. This specification allows for the incorporation of crumb rubber into asphalt mixes for light traffic roads (suitable for Local Government use), thereby helping Local Governments in their support for the recycling of waste tyres.
This presentation will outline why the specification was developed, the general principles behind the specification, benefits for Local Government and opportunities for Local Governments to trial the specification.
